MLB.com At Bat (sports, $9.99) – The MLB.com At Bat app is the official application of Major League Baseball. When the app is opened, there is a list of the day’s games. There is a pitch by pitch play tracker that automatically updates every 15 seconds. But what really is unique about MLB.com At Bat is the feature that links in with an MLB.TV account and allows users to watch live baseball games on their device. There is also a free game every day that is available to anyone, even if they do not have an MLB.TV account.
Pocket God (entertainment, $0.99) – Have you ever felt like you need to calm down by killing little islanders. Well if you have, Pocket God is the app for you. It is an entertaining application about several little islanders called pygmies and lets you be in control. Since you are the god, you can choose how you want to treat the pygmies. You can feed them to dinosaurs or sharks, you could fling them into volcanoes or the ocean, or you can make them fight each other as ghosts, zombies, or vampires. Or you could be nice and help them defeat dinosaurs or ice monsters. No matter how you control them, Pocket God is a good application for anyone who wants to have total control.
Free Translator (Utility, free) – Free Translator is a free application that takes text and translates it into another language, such as Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and more. This is extremely useful while completing homework for language classes. Unfortunately, this app requires wifi or 3G signals for use, so it cannot be used during school.
Flight Control (games, $0.99) – Flight Control is a great casual game. It puts you in the position of a flight control tower worker who has to guide planes to the correct runway. This might sound boring, but it is very addictive. There are four levels, a basic airport, a seaside airport, an aircraft carrier, and an airport in Australia that services the Royal Flying Doctors Service. There are also four types of planes, a large commercial jet, a small commercial jet, a private jet, and helicopters.
Shazam (music, free) – Shazam is a free music service that uses the microphone in the iPhone to tell you what song is playing. It only works on the iPhone because it requires a microphone and internet. Shazam listens to the song for several seconds and then tells you the songs information, along with links to buy it on iTunes, listen to it on YouTube, and Google it.
Touchgrind (games, $4.99) – Touchgrind is a game that replicates Tech Deck skateboards on the iPod Touch or iPhone. You use your finger to flick the skateboard in the air. To do tricks all you have to do is drag your fingers along the screen.
Pandora Radio (music, free) – Pandora Radio is an online application that allows you to make “radio stations” for your favorite genre, band, or song. It then compiles a list of free songs made up of songs by the artist you chose and bands like it. The only downside is that it requires the internet and you can only skip five songs at a time.
ESPN ScoreCenter (sports, free)-ESPN ScoreCenter is the best application for lovers of all types of sports. You can choose from almost all professional sports to make pages for. Each sport has a page that you can flip between. On each page, there is a list of all of the recent and upcoming games. Then you can tap on each game to get a more stats and reviews.
Google Mobile (utility, free)-Google Mobile is essentially a specialized Google browser. It also has links to Gmail and other Google services. The unique feature is that on the iPhone, there is an option to speak the search into the microphone instead of typing it.
ABC News (news, free)-ABC News is a news app that provides the stories from ABC.com. This includes business, world, US, entertainment, tech, and sports news. It also has video newscasts.
