More than 400 Day students attend first school dance
by M. G. and A. L.
The first dance of the 2004-’ 05 school year was a success by all accounts. Gina Healy, interim Day principal, estimated that the attendance at the dance was around 460 people, which is more than half of Day’s population.
The dance floor featured a disco ball and a D. J. Music by Usher, Outkast, and L’il Jon were very popular. An Elton John song kicked off the slow-dancing.
Like most school gatherings, the dance was held in the Day cafeteria, which was transformed into a dance floor with a few decorations here and a couple of dimmed lights there. The dance was open from 7 - 9:30PM to Day students, who had previously purchased a ticket. Drinks were available for 50 cents, but were sold out halfway through.
There were many teachers serving as chaperones: J. C., Silver Team English teacher; B. S., Day Spanish teacher; S. B. and J. M., the assistant principals, and Day’s interim principal, Gina Healy.
The courtyard was opened by the chaperones about a half an hour into the dance and was popular at times when the dance floor became too warm or stuffy with all the kids moving around.
Owing to the success of the first dance, another will be held on January the 21st.

New 6th grade students feted at ice cream party
by A. H. and T. K.
An ice cream social was held in student services on October the 18th, for 6th grade Day students who were new to the Newton Community.
The students shared a little about the differences they have noticed between Day and their old schools.
For O. S., Day allows girls to play many more sports than her old school in Alabama . Another girl shared that there was much more art at Day, and it more in-depth than at her old school.
A. S-W., one of Day’s guidance counselors noted that they were all “...fabulous students”.
One student had previously attended a deaf school and he said that the people at Day talk a lot more, which presented a challenge.
Many students agreed that the school offered a fresh new environment and more of a challenge. Some students claimed that Day gave out more homework than their old school, while others felt they received less homework.
They all said that they have made many friends and that there are lots of good people at Day. The students had a great time enjoying ice cream and getting to know each other and their new school.
