Asian Pacific Islander

Asian-Pacific Islander Club anticipates field trip

by .G. and R.F.

Once a week, 17 or so students walk into Room 313 for a meeting of the Asian-Pacific Islander Club (APIC), advised by teacher D. F. This club is for students of all ages who would like to learn more about Asian culture.

The club does projects, plays games, goes on field trips, or hangs out in the gym. In November, APIC will go to China Town for Dim Sum and hopes to go to the Museum of Science, but has not yet decided.

D. F.’s favorite activity in this coming year will be “Asian awareness month in May because we do a lot of research on Asian people and countries.....and I always learn something new.”

Last month the club was just hanging out, but D.F. encourages club members to show, even if there is no special activity (such as a project or field trip) happening that day.

The club is still open to people who want to join, even though there is already a large number of people. APIC meets Thursdays at 2:35 , and D. F. is looking for a teacher who is available to co-advise the club.

Black History

Black History Club offers a chance to learn, perform

by M. G. and R. G.

This month the Black History Production Club will continue preparing to perform renditions of songs previously performed by famous African American singers such as Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner.

Some activities that this club does when it meets are role playing, skits, poetry, and they even sing!

Two sixth grade club members, M. D. and D. J. J. said that what they like about the Black History production club is, “We get to learn about the African American past.” The two think that more people should join.

The club meets every Thursday in Room 211. New participants are always welcome to join.

Girls Engineering Club

Girls’ Engineering Club offers girls a chance to build

by R. F. and A. M.

The Girls’ Engineering Club is a place for girls of any grade to go any Thursday after school to work on a variety of engineering type problems.

The club is advised by S. C. and is run by the girls themselves in Room 107.

This club was started three years ago because Ms.C. wanted a club just for girls to experience tools, machines, and problem solving in a comfortable atmosphere. Any female can sign up Thursdays after school in Room 107.

This club has gone on field trips in the past, but has none officially planned at this time. A trip will probably be planned in the early spring.

Scrapbooking

Scrapbook Club offers a way to preserve memories

by P. N.

Scrapbooking Club is for 6th graders and meets on Thursday afternoons at 2:45PM in Room 309. P. H., the group’s leader, has been doing scrapbooking for a year and will be accompanied by J. C., the Silver Team language arts teacher, and M. C., a counseling intern.

For Scrapbooking Club, participants are expected to bring your own scrapbook and photos.

However, the other materials will be provided. For people who don’t know what scrapbooking is, it means decorating a book with collages and photos about yourself and your world.

P. H. says that members will learn how to do original things such as using a hole puncher to make interesting designs.

Student Council

Student Council is off to a productive start

by J. C. and M. D. P.

Student Council is off to a great start for the year! They are planning many all-school events.

Currently, members are conducting a food drive for the Newton Food Pantry through Friday of this week. If any Day students have any canned food, especially canned fruit, drop it off in homeroom. The Newton Food Pantry has requested that no boxes of food be donated.

The Courtyard clean-up was a big success! Members extend a big thanks to all the people who helped out. Look forward to spring planting and painting projects planned by the Community Service Committee.

Student Council has regular meetings Mondays after school. New members are welcome to join, but should first see M. H. in room 109.

Video

Video Club

by A. L. and A. L.

There are lots of interesting things to do in Video Club, such as make videos, do projects, film things, and use the blue screen. Currently, flash cartoons are emerging as a favorite.

Students are free to do their own thing. “My favorite thing to do is to create things in animation programs and to edit using non-linear editing.” said T. T., the club’s advisor.

Those interested, should come to Room 104 on Mondays and Wednesdays after school.

Yoga

Yoga brings strength to mind and body

by S. K. and M. L.

Yoga and Meditation is a club for the mind and body. It is run by the Platinum science teacher, J. R., in Room 101 every Wednesday after school.

Yoga is a very gentle exercise combining stretches and different positions. “Yoga helps to improve flexibility, strength and coordination,” says J. R.

Meditation is an exercise for the mind combining breathing exercises and different body positions such as the lotus pose. “Meditation helps you deal with stress, learn to focus and it helps improve self-confidence,” J. R. says.

J. R. wants people to know that this club is for all learning levels- from beginners to yoga experts and they can stop in any time.
