“Revolutionary Women”

“It’s a Man’s World, Unless Women Vote,” read the buttons pinned onto nearly every shirt of each attendee of the “Revolutionary Women” seminar on July the 27th, 2004. This was one of many events attended by DAYTIME reporters covering the Democratic National Convention.

“Revolutionary Women” is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to increase the leadership role of women in American society. The primary objective of “Revolutionary Women” as an organization, as well as that of the seminar, was to celebrate women’s political leadership, and work toward not only empowering women to run for political office, but to support fellow women by encouraging all to vote.

It is a belief of “Revolutionary Women” that electing women to government positions will lead to many positive improvements for the country, because it is likely that a female politician would support families, advocate for social justice, use nonviolent ways of solving problems, and make an effort to protect the environment.

These goals were reinforced at the seminar through a special luncheon from EMILY’s List, a political network that supports and helps to elect Democratic women.

The speakers at the luncheon included the president of EMILY’s List, Ellen Malcolm; a Senator from Maryland, Barbara Mikulski; U. S. Representative Nancy Pilosi; Ann Richards, former governor of Texas; and Jennifer Granholm, Governor of Michigan. Following the EMILY’s List luncheon, “Revolutionary Women” organized over 10 seminars of different focus for the attendees.

It was made apparent by the deafening applause after each speaker at the luncheon that the goals of “Revolutionary Women” were well-expressed by the speakers and well-received by the listeners.
