Outside a grand State Street party, held primarily for Hillary Clinton, DAYTIME reporters met with 59-year-old Representative from the 9th Congressional District of California, Barbara Lee, who led the “Revolutionary Women” seminars and meeting at the new Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.
Lee said the goal of the program was to showcase women in political leadership positions. Massachusetts has not had a women in Congress in 20 years. “We want to show women in Massachusetts what great leadership looks like,” said Lee.
When asked what the purpose of government was, Lee told reporters it was to “...serve the people, offer services like education, safety, health care. Government is to take care of the people.”
Lee said that female activists are better on issues such as families, the environment, justice, and non-violent conflict resolution strategies. Also mentioned during the interview was a new study showing that 22 million unmarried women did not vote. Lee feels these women do not trust male politicians, and women in office would make a significant difference.
