Day’s band and chorus perform at patriotic rally

Review

On the occasion of the departure of 2 Day teachers for duty in the Middle East, a rally was held in the Day Gym featuring speeches delivered by local dignitaries and by the teachers leaving themselves. Possibly most memorable, however, were the inspiring pieces performed by the Day band and chorus.

The music teachers directed the band and chorus, respectively. Students from all 3 grade levels performed for the rest of the school with their instruments and their voices.

The first song was “The Star-spangled Banner”, performed by two 8th graders. Singing in almost flawless harmony, the two 8th graders showed the audience what patriotism is. The version of The National Anthem that the 8th graders sang deviated slightly from the original tune, but showcased their vocal talents.

After a few words from the principal, the band and the chorus joined together to produce “A Patriotic Festival.” As the band enthusiastically played snatches of popular patriotic musical pieces, the chorus joined in. This combination of instruments and voices showed that displaying American pride can be a beautiful thing. The result was a wowing experience.

Following short speeches from city and state officials, the Day chorus performed another selection. This “Choral Tribute” was touching and uplifting, but at the same time it was a reminder of the wonderful teachers who will be leaving the school.

An Irish ballad entitled “Slane” involved a ballet piece and a three person band. the dancer performed en pointe, moving with grace and ease across the gymnasium floor. Three people each played a different instrument, portraying slightly haunting music for the dance.

The members of the chorus and the band truly outdid themselves performing for the departing teachers, and the whole school. Their pieces reflected the feeling of the moment: bittersweet. Difficult as it is to see teachers leaving, there is pride for them embedded in the hearts of many students and staff. The band and chorus carried the day, gathering the feelings of the crowd, and expressing them as beautiful music.
