If the name of a club isn't a hyperlink, then there was no new about that club this month.
by A. G. and E. M.
May is Asian awareness month, and this year Asian
Pacific Islander Club (APIC) members are being especially
aware. The students are focusing mostly on the Southeast
Asia/Pacific area because of the devastating earthquakes
and tsunamis that recently hit the region.
Although Asian relief is the club’s project
for Asian awareness month, APIC has actually been working
on relief since the disaster. The club has been selling
T-shirts with a Day dragon on the front and the names
of all of Day's staff members and every student in
the grade of whoever is buying the shirt on the other
side.
Shirts sell for $10 each. The money will go directly
to helping students and their schools in Thailand or
Indonesia. The East West Center (EWC) in Honolulu is "...coordinating
these efforts and matching the funds raised by [APIC]
for their Schools Helping Schools initiative," says
D. F., the advisor of the club.
When EWC has liaisons in place, they will let D.
F. know to which schools the funds will be directed.
So far the club has raised a total of $1.320, with
132 shirts sold. They will continue working on this
throughout the year.
But now that May is here, the club is doing even
more. Students are researching and then creating a
display, and part of their focus for this is the destruction
and how it has affected children and their education.
Student Council
Courtyard
cleanup is next on Council’s agenda
by J. C.
As the school year continues, the Student Council
is still hard at work.
This month’s activities include the wrapping
up of the Day Dragon LiveStrong bracelets, 400
of which have been sold, raising $800.00 for the school!
One of the other projects that the Student Council
is working on is the ongoing beautification of the
Day Courtyard. The student representatives of
the Council will go to Home Depot to gather their supplies
for the courtyard clean-up, which will be continued
from the Fall. Members will be planting flowers
to spruce up the area. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams will
be helping to decorate the courtyard as well.
Math League ends season on high note
by E. A. and D. B.
The Math League’s season ended with a pizza
party, which was held on April the 14th. The celebration
ended a winning year. Math League competitors are attending
a ceremony where they will receive certificates.
In late September, or early October, the Math League
will reconvene. They will practice after school on
Thursdays. Similar to this year, the team is hoping
for more 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to join.
All 7th graders on the math League present this year,
will be continuing next year. They also hope to win
all 5 meets for next season.

As expected, the Swim and Dive Club ended its 12-week
season on Wednesday, April the 13 th. Jade Team science
teacher A. R. helped coach the club.
Students interested in the club for next year, will
be able to learn the strokes that will help them with
swim meets. Also, students will work with coaches from
Newton North.
Unfortunately, Day swimmers will not compete because
there are no other middle school swim teams in the
area.
