Math

Day Math Team concludes winning season

by E. A. and D. B.

The math team brought exciting news back from their final meet this year, on March the 31st. They had won the meet against Brookline, Bigelow, Oak Hill, Brown, and a few other schools. They were rewarded with big blue ribbons and lots of celebration.

“[This meet] was by far the closest and most exciting because we only won by two points,” coach B. M. said of the latest competition. It was their 4th win in a row. While the victory was a big team effort, B. M. wants to congratulate a few of the 8th grade math team members: P. M., R. V., and R. W. for their outstanding effort. These students had the highest scores on the team.

The team has challenge work for students. “[These math problems] are mostly the same concepts they learn in school, just harder,” B. M. said. “Lots of kids enjoy practicing and organizing a ‘strategy’ for the next meet.” B. M. said he can “...see the difference” with students in his math class who are also on the math team.

The PTO provides refreshments for the meets. B. M. and the team thank the PTO “...for all their hard work for us to be here,” B. M. said.

The math team is looking forward to another great season next year, because they have a “...strong 7th grade base,” B. M. said, and a good reputation.

Yoga

Yoga and Meditation squeezes out bad feelings, promotes relaxation

by M. L. and Z. W.

Yoga and Meditation is a club where students can let go of bad feelings and concentrate on relaxing. When students start Yoga with J. R., Platinum Team science teacher, they learn to do poses like crane, side-crane, fish, mountain, tree, and many others.

In part of the class, there are several different mediations. Color meditation is when students think of a color, and concentrate solely on that color the whole time, while they say “Ohmm”.

There is also the Ohmm meditation where students think of something that has been bothering them during the week, and say Ohmm as if they are letting go of that feeling.

Another activity is making mantras. A mantra is a repetition of a word that calms and soothes one. For example, if something was bothering a person, and the word “candles” soothes, one would repeat the word several times.

Students, who would like to join the Yoga and Meditation Club, Wednesdays after school, should see J. R. in Room 101.
