Asian Pacific Islander Club is raising relief money

by A. G. and E. M.

As most Day students know, there has been a lot of trauma in Asia recently, due to the tsunamis, but the Asian Pacific Islander Club (APIC) is reaching out to help.

According to D. F., club advisor, the club is, “gearing up to do a T-shirt fundraiser for a school in the tsunami region.” They are just about ready to take orders. The money raised will help this club “...adopt a school.” D. F. hopes to “...make a connection” with the school that they hope to help rebuild. They then hope to be able to communicate with the students.

Last month, through the generosity of the PTO, the club hosted New England Odaiko, or “ONE” to perform at Day. This group is made up of 3 drummers who, as an occupation, interweave traditional and modern Japanese drumming routines. This art requires a great deal of energy, strength, concentration, and practice.

ONE was part of APIC’s unit on music. At the moment, club members are preoccupied with fundraisers, but the unit will continue in April. They will then be researching musicians for Asian Awareness month in May.

Black History Club puts on a show!

by M. G. and R. G.

The Black History Production Club performed for Day Middle School on Wednesday, February the 16th, and had a chance to show the school what they had been working on for months [see DAYTIME’s review in the Arts section - Ed.].

There was lots of singing and dancing mostly performed by the girls who belong to the Black History Club.

The show ended with a bang! The cast presented a song and everybody who helped out with the play, or was in it, was given a moment to dance. At the end the audience even had a chance to get up and dance!

Day’s Girls’ Engineering Club begins electronics unit

by A. M.

This month the Girls’ Engineering Club has started their electronics unit. S. C., the advisor, has ordered electronic components for the girls to work with. S. C. ordered a “...keyboard, that the kids have to wire, and a telephone.” The girls in the club have to get the telephone to turn on and off, and to function.

S. C. is trying to organize a field trip to U. Mass. Amherst for April.

S. C. enjoys “...when everyone is into what they’re doing,” and has no part of the club that she dislikes. “There is none, it is all rewarding,” says S. C. This club is still open to any girl who is interested in joining. It meets on Thursdays after school at 2:45.

Day’s Math League has reinvented itself, and scores wins

by E. A. and D. B.

On Thursday, February the 17th, the math league won its meet against 4 other schools. “[The questions] were harder this time.” Math league advisor B. M., Jade Team math teacher, said. Day has recently been crushing the competition. This is quite a comeback, compared to the losing streak a few years ago. The last meet of the season will be on March the 31st.

A fantastic season is almost ending for the Day Math League. During math league meets students practice algebra, geometry, and number theory word problems.

The math league is open to all grades, and the math problems are 8th to 9th grade level, bringing on a challenge for students. One math league member, Blue Team 8th grader C. W., explains, “Math club is really fun and interesting... more 8th grade girls should join!”

“I like helping the kids on the team prepare for each meet,” B. M. said.

“[The math league’s] goal for next year is to win every competition, like this year.” This is B. M. ’s first year advising the math league.

Student Council is active in fundraising

by J. H. and A. T.

The Day Student council has been busy for the last two weeks planning to sell "DAY DRAGON" wristbands which will retail for $2. The student council members have been reminding their homerooms to participate in bringing in spare change for Pennies for Patients. They will stop collecting in two days, on March 18th, so remember to bring in spare change! Also, they have been filming commercials for the Pennies for Patients drive, for leukemia and lymphoma.

"Those two things will keep us [the student council] very busy," explained advisor M. H. As the Student Council can only take on so many tasks at a time, they will be explanding the familiarity of the two they are working on. They will be filming commercials to try and project their ideas and show what the projects will do for the school.

Day’s new Swim and Dive Club is generating much interest

by P. N. and M. G.

F. A. Day has its first swim and dive club. A. R., a Day science teacher and one of the swim coaches at Newton North High school, thought that Day should have its own swimming and diving club. The response has been enthusiastic.

Sessions are from every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 3:15 to 4:15 at the Newton North pool. During these practices, swimmers and divers learn about competitive swimming and diving.

The three coaches, A. R., K. T., and E.   K. decided that if there was a swim team at Day, then students would be able to swim, and dive with Newton North’s swim and dive teams.

According to A. R., swimming and diving is a good life-long sport.
