Artist of the month

S. D. is an artist of many talents

by B. H.-M.

Artist of the month S. D. is a multi-talented student here at Day. She can play the flute, sing, dance, and performs some theater.

S. D. has played the flute with our own Day band. She also performs in the All-City Band, a music program here in Newton. She also sings with our chorus and with the All-City Chorus and Troubadours, like their chorus, but for older kids.

With All-City Chorus, S. D. performed at last year’s Martin Luther King Day Sermon, singing “Amazing Grace”. She also performed in last year’s 6th grade production “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dream Coat”. She was one of the girls who danced and sang to the “King Tut” song.

S. D. also used to act with her old after school program, Day After Day at Horace Mann. She danced with her Chinese dance program at First Night this year.

What inspired S. D. to start using her talents was several things. In 4th grade, she was required to play an instrument. Since so many people wanted to play flute, she decided to “go with the flow”. This is S. D.’s 3rd year playing the flute.

In 5th grade, her music teacher told her to join All-City Chorus because her teacher thought D. was a beautiful singer in their 4th and 5th grade chorus. This is S. D.’s 3rd year singing there.

Dancing started when she was young, so her mother signed her up to dance. After a couple of years dancing, S. D. quit for awhile. She didn’t start dancing again until one year ago when her dance teacher asked her to come back.

Theater was always in S. D.’s life when she moved to Newton in her 3rd grade year. She has been in all the Day After Day productions, D. recently did “West Side Story” with her after school program.

This year, she continues in all these activities with many concerts in the spring. D. loves to perform and perform well. “I like it [music art] because sometimes I get lost in the music and become it,” she said when asked about why she likes to perform.
